Celebrate The Bullet by The Selecter
About the album Celebrate The Bullet
The second album by The Selecter was released in 1981. Many things have changed for the band since the previous year. First of all, The Selecter released their album through Chrysalis Records. Secondly, producer Roger Lomas gave a slower tempo to many of the band's compositions and insisted on incorporating elements of new wave, which did not sit well with Charley Anderson and Desmond Brown, who left the group. Thirdly, Celebrate The Bullet and its song lyrics had a more political and social identity compared to their debut songs.
Celebrate The Bullet did not have the same commercial impact as the first album and this was not due to the aforementioned changes but because of a coincidence. Celebrate The Bullet was released on February 27, 1981. A month later, on March 30, U.S. President Ronald Reagan was shot in an assassination attempt in Washington, D.C. The first single from the album was the title track, so owing to the unfortunate coincidence, there weren't many daring radio stations that would play a song with that title at that time (!)
Celebrate The Bullet reached No.41 in the United Kingdom. Over the years, the album has been more appreciated, and its value has certainly been highlighted.
