Life After Death by The Notorious B.I.G.
About the album Life After Death
Life After Death, released on March 25, 1997, is not just an album; it's the sonic will of The Notorious B.I.G. The album hit the shelves just 16 days after Biggie's murder in Los Angeles, turning its listening into an almost metaphysical experience for the audience of the time. Consider that the album starts with Somebody's Gotta Die and ends with You're Nobody (Til Somebody Kills You) (!). However, things become even more eerie due to the cover, depicting Notorious B.I.G. standing next to a hearse, wearing a black suit and hat, in a foggy cemetery (!). Today, it is considered the gold standard for the "double album" in hip-hop.
The recording of the album began in 1995 and was completed under the weight of the intense rivalry between the East and West Coasts. Biggie, despite a car accident that left him recording with a cane, showed tremendous evolution. If Ready To Die was the raw narrative of a drug dealer, Life After Death was the blockbuster of a "Capone" of hip-hop. With producers like The Hitmen, DJ Premier, and RZA, the sound became richer, marrying hardcore rap with pop sensibilities.
Its success was sweeping. It became one of the few hip-hop albums to be certified diamond in the U.S., recording millions of sales. Singles like Hypnotize and Mo Money Mo Problems dominated the charts, proving that rap could be both street and mainstream spectacle.
