Turn! Turn! Turn! by The Byrds
About the album Turn! Turn! Turn!
Turn! Turn! Turn! is the second studio album by the American rock band The Byrds, which was released on December 6, 1965, by Columbia Records. It is considered one of the cornerstones of folk rock and the continuation of the success of their debut, Mr. Tambourine Man.
The album's recordings took place from June 28 to November 1, 1965, at Columbia Studios in Hollywood. The album was produced by Terry Melcher, who played a crucial role in shaping the band's distinctive sound. Turn! Turn! Turn! formalized the genre of folk rock, combining traditional melodies with electric instruments. It is characterized by polyphonic harmonies and the "jangly" sound of Roger McGuinn's twelve-string Rickenbacker guitar. Beyond the compositions of the Byrds' members, the album includes two covers of songs by Bob Dylan, The Times They Are a-Changin' and Lay Down Your Weary Tune. The cover photo was taken by Guy Webster and shows the band members in a stylized pose of the era.
The single Turn! Turn! Turn! reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 1965. The album itself reached No. 17 in the U.S. and No. 11 in the United Kingdom.
