About the album Whoops! There Goes The Neighbourhood
The album Whoops! There Goes the Neighbourhood by The Blow Monkeys was released on January 30, 1989. It is the band's fourth studio album and marks a strong shift towards dance and house music, while still maintaining their sophisti-pop and funk elements. In other words, it combines the Chicago house scene with pop, soul, and jazz-funk. Lyrically, Dr. Robert maintained his strong political critique of the British reality at the time.
The recording of the album was done with the use of more electronic media (sequencers, synthesizers) compared to their previous works, although natural orchestrations with wind and string instruments were preserved. The production was a collective effort of many significant names, such as Leon F. Sylvers III, Julian Mendelsohn, and Dr. Robert himself.
The album reached No. 46 in the United Kingdom. The biggest hit of the record was Wait, a duet by Dr. Robert with Kym Mazelle, which reached No. 7 in the United Kingdom. The single This Is Your Life reached No. 32 after a remix by Ten City. Although the album did not achieve the sales of their previous record (She Was Only A Grocer's Daughter), it is considered one of their most mature and experimental albums.
