...Famous Last Words... by Supertramp
About the album ...Famous Last Words...
Supertramp's 1982 album ...Famous Last Words... serves as a melancholic yet commercially successful epilogue for the band's classic lineup. With this record, Supertramp bid farewell to an entire era. Produced by the band and Peter Henderson, the process was unique and challenging due to the strained relationship between Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies. Hodgson recorded his parts at Unicorn Studios (at his home in Nevada City), while Davies recorded at his own home, The Backyard Studio in Encino. This geographical and artistic distance meant that the members were rarely in the studio together.
Musically, the record oscillates between art-rock and progressive pop, with a strong lean toward the lighter, "radio-friendly" sound of the '80s. An interesting detail is that the lyrics on the back cover were color-coded: white for Hodgson’s songs and yellow for Davies’, highlighting their separation (!).
Despite the internal friction, the album was a major success, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard 200 in the US and No. 6 in the UK. ...Famous Last Words... was certified gold in both the US and the UK, with total global sales exceeding 5,000,000 copies. The single "It's Raining Again" became a worldwide hit, peaking at No. 11 in the US.
