Promise by Sade
About the album Promise
Promise is the second studio album by the English band Sade, which was released in November 1985. It is considered one of the most iconic records of the 1980s, establishing Sade Adu as the "personification of cool".
Promise is characterized by a sophisticated blend of soul, smooth jazz, funk, and sophisti-pop. It features a glossy and "state-of-the-art" production for its time, combining analog recordings with the new generation of digital keyboards. The songs were written by the band members (Sade Adu, Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale, Paul S. Denman). Sade Adu co-wrote all the lyrics except for one. The recording of the album began in February 1985 and was completed in August of the same year. Production was done by the band itself in collaboration with the team from their first album: Robin Millar, Mike Pela, and Ben Rogan. The album includes the classic singles The Sweetest Taboo, Is It a Crime? and Never As Good As The First Time.
The album reached No1 in both the United Kingdom and the U.S., becoming the first Sade album to conquer the top on both sides of the Atlantic. It also reached the top in the Netherlands, Finland, and Switzerland.
