The Uplift Mofo Party Plan by Red Hot Chili Peppers
About the album The Uplift Mofo Party Plan
The Uplift Mofo Party Plan was released on September 29, 1987, by EMI-Manhattan Records. It is the only studio album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers recorded with the band's full original lineup: Anthony Kiedis (vocals), Flea (bass), Hillel Slovak (guitar), and Jack Irons (drums). It was the third album in the band's discography.
The recording took place between May and June 1987 at Capitol Studios (Los Angeles) and Eldorado Recording Studios (Burbank). The process was difficult due to Kiedis and Slovak's drug addiction, with Kiedis often disappearing during the sessions. The album was produced by Michael Beinhorn, who encouraged the group to broaden their musical horizons. The sound is described by Flea as their most "rock" album, full of energy, "gang-vocals," and slap bass. Funk rock, punk rock, with influences from reggae and heavy metal characterized the album's sound.
It was the band's first album to enter the Billboard 200, reaching No. 148. It is considered their commercial and artistic "breakthrough" before the international success of the '90s. The tour for The Uplift Mofo Party Plan (1987-1988) was the most intense yet also the most tragic period in the history of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, as it marked the end of their original lineup, culminating in the untimely death of Hillel Slovak and the departure of Jack Irons.
