About the album Doolittle
Prior to recording Doolittle, the Pixies had toured the European continent, where their debut had been better received than it had been in the United States, with particular success — relatively speaking — in Great Britain. The Pixies entered the studio in November 1988 and in just over three weeks recorded their second album, Doolittle.
Doolittle also consists mainly of compositions by Black Francis. The producer of the second album is the Englishman Gil Norton. Photographer Simon Larbalestier and designer Vaughan Oliver, who were responsible for creating the album cover, had access to the song lyrics and thus were able to create some details on it based on the content of the lyrics. What, of course, dominates the cover is the monkey with the halo, which comes from the song "Monkey Gone To Heaven," which was also the first single from the album.
Initially, Doolittle's success came in the United Kingdom, where it reached No. 8. The Pixies' compatriots continued to turn their backs on them. Doolittle reached No. 98 on the Billboard chart.
