Zuma by Neil Young
About the album Zuma
Zuma from 1975 is one of the most iconic albums by Neil Young and marks his return to electric sound after the dark "Ditch Trilogy". It was released on November 10, 1975, by Reprise Records.
The recording took place primarily at producer David Briggs' house in Malibu (Point Dume) and at Broken Arrow Ranch between 1974 and 1975, while the production was done by Briggs in collaboration with Neil Young, achieving a raw but vivid sound. The album combines hard rock and country rock with acoustic moments. Several of the album's songs were inspired by Neil Young's breakup with actress Carrie Snodgress at the time. Standout tracks from the album include Cortez The Killer, an epic 7-minute piece with extensive guitar solos, considered one of the top songs by the Canadian songwriter, and Danger Bird, which is one of the heaviest and most emotional pieces of Neil Young's career. The cover is a simple, almost "primitive" sketch depicting a bird and a woman, creating a sense of freedom and simplicity.
In the United States, it reached No. 25. In 1997, it was recognized as a gold record by the RIAA. Its success in Canada (Young's country of origin) was also notable.
