Psychedelic Pill by Neil Young
About the album Psychedelic Pill
Psychedelic Pill from 2012 is Neil Young's 34th studio album and his second collaboration with Crazy Horse within the same year. It is an album renowned for its spontaneity, as many songs resulted from extended jam sessions. It is Young's longest studio album (about 87 minutes), which necessitated its release on double CD and triple vinyl. It includes 9 tracks, with three of them exceeding 15 minutes. Notable is Driftin' Back, the opening epic with a duration of 27:36 (!), full of extensive improvisations.
The album's style moves along the classic hard rock and psychedelic rock paths of Crazy Horse, with "dirty" guitars, raw sound, and extended jams. The lyrics have a strong autobiographical character, influenced by Young's writing of his autobiography during that period. Psychedelic Pill was recorded in 2012, right after the creation of the album Americana. The recordings took place at Audio Casa Blanca studio on Neil Young’s Broken Arrow Ranch in California between January 6 and March 7, 2012. The album had three producers: Young, John Hanlon, and Mark Humphreys.
The album reached No. 8 on the Billboard, No. 7 in Canada, and No. 14 in the United Kingdom. The album received mainly positive reviews, with many considering it the best work he has done with Crazy Horse in decades.
