God's Son by NAS
About the album God's Son
Nas's album God's Son was released on December 13, 2002, by Columbia Records and Ill Will, marking the rapper's sixth official album from New York. It is considered one of his most personal and mature works, signaling his return to his roots. The main source of inspiration for this album was the death of his mother, Fannie Ann Jones, from cancer earlier in 2002. Additionally, the album was influenced by his rivalry with Jay-Z.
The album serves East Coast Hip Hop, combining hardcore hip hop with elements of conscious hip hop, soul, and jazz. Its sound is characterized by "dark, sparse boom-bap" productions that emphasize lyricism. Recording took place during the period 2001–2002 at various studios in New York. The production was handled by a team of top producers, with Salaam Remi being the main architect of the sound. Other names involved in the production of God's Son tracks include Salaam Remi, Eminem (on The Cross), The Alchemist, Chucky Thompson, Ron Browz, and Alicia Keys. The first single, Made You Look, was a street anthem with a strong old-school style. I Can, with a sample from Beethoven's Für Elise and The Honey Drippers' Impeach The President, became the album's biggest commercial success.
God's Son went platinum in the USA, reaching No.12 on the Billboard and the top of the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.
