About the album Absolution
In September 2002, Muse released their third studio album titled Absolution. This album was a decisive and defining step in their career as they established their epic and orchestral sound. The album's production was done by the band itself and Rich Costey. John Cornfield and Paul Reeve also participated in additional production.
The recording of Absolution took place in various studios, mainly at Grouse Lodge in Ireland. Other locations included AIR Studios and Livingston in London, as well as Cello Studios in Los Angeles. Unlike previous albums that were recorded hastily, the band consciously took time to work together in one space. They used experimental methods, such as recording drums in a pool or in open air (!). The album combines alternative rock, progressive rock, and art rock. It is characterized by a darker, heavier, and more aggressive sound compared to the past, while there are strong classical elements, with influences from composers such as Rachmaninov and Samuel Barber. Bands like Queen, Metallica, and Radiohead are also mentioned as reference points. The lyrics focus on apocalyptic, theological, and emotional themes, such as fear, distrust, and the end of the world.
The single Time Is Running Out became their first Top-10 hit in the UK, reaching No8. Since its release, Absolution has sold over 3,500,000 copies worldwide.
