About the album No Sleep 'til Hammersmith
No Sleep 'til Hammersmith (1981) is considered one of the top live recorded albums in heavy metal history. Despite its title, the album does not include recordings from the Hammersmith Odeon, but mainly from concerts in Leeds and Newcastle during the "Short Sharp Pain In The Neck" tour. It was recorded by the classic trio of Motörhead: Lemmy (bass, vocals), "Fast" Eddie Clarke (guitar), and Phil "Philthy Animal" Taylor (drums).
Approximately 50% of the album comes from the concert at Newcastle City Hall on March 30, 1981. Only the track Iron Horse/Born to Lose is an older recording from 1980.
It is the band's only album to reach No. 1 on the British charts immediately after its release. It includes classic tracks such as Ace of Spades, "Overkill", Stay Clean, Bomber, and the eponymous Motorhead. Lemmy had stated that the huge success of the album was, in a way, their "destruction," as it was almost impossible to replicate such commercial appeal with subsequent releases.
