About the album Kick Out The Jams
When MC5 released their debut in 1969 titled Kick Out The Jams, few could understand what kind of music they were playing. This particular album is what we call "ahead of its time". Fred "Sonic" Smith's group started from Michigan in 1963 and after several adventures they managed to record their first album.
Kick Out The Jams was recorded live. The eight songs that make up the album are a selection of songs from what the band played during two of their performances on the 30th and October 1968 in Detroit. The album received rather negative reviews at the time of its release. However, developments in rock music over the next decade brought it to prominence as here MC5 and the anger that is more than evident have defined the album as a precursor to punk and heavy metal.
Above all, what remains from the album aside from the harshness of the sound is the phrase shouted by singer Rob Tyner: "And right now... right now... right now it's time to... kick out the jams, motherfuckers!" The phrase of the title means in free translation: dispel every limitation.
