About the album The Modern Lovers

Somewhere in the early '70s in the city of Natick, Massachusetts, Jonathan Richman formed the Modern Lovers. The band adopted a sound influenced by the Velvet Underground and the Stooges, with a strong dose of garage rock music as it had developed during the previous decade. In 1976, their first album, The Modern Lovers, was released.

John Cale produced six tracks of the album, while the compositions are by Jonathan Richman.

The album did not achieve great commercial success at the time, but it is one of those albums that open new paths. Thus, The Modern Lovers is an album belonging to the pre-punk era. It influenced bands like the Sex Pistols, who even chose to cover the album's opening track, "Roadrunner," on their own album a little while later, The Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle.
