About the album New York
From May to October 1988, Lou Reed and his collaborators spent time at Mediasound Studios in New York, and in the very early days of 1989, the fifteenth studio album of this very unique artist was released, bearing the name of his beloved city as its title.
New York consists of fourteen rock stories that Lou Reed whispers into the listener's ear, keeping them alert from the beginning to the end of the album. This was the album's great success; the interest doesn't wane in even one song. The production was done by Lou Reed and Fred Maher, who also plays drums on most of the tracks.
The album received rave reviews from critics, and it also did very well in sales terms. In the United States, it sold 500,000 copies, and another 100,000 in Great Britain. From whichever angle you look at it, New York stands among Lou Reed's top albums, and there was probably no similar release until the end of his career.
