About the album Songs Of Love And Hate

Released on March 19, 1971, Songs Of Love And Hate is Leonard Cohen's third studio album and one of the most iconic of his career. The production was handled by Bob Johnston, who had collaborated with Cohen on his previous album.

Most of the album was recorded at Columbia Studio A in Nashville (September 22–26, 1970). Additional recordings were made at Trident Studios in London. The song Sing Another Song, Boys is the only live recording on the album, originating from Cohen's performance at the Isle of Wight festival on August 30, 1970. The album is considered one of the darkest and most emotionally intense of his discography. It moves in the style of folk music, with minimalist orchestration focusing on the acoustic guitar and Cohen’s deep voice, while also using strings and children's choirs. Critics of the time described it as "morbid" and "his most melancholic."

Despite its current fame, the album did not achieve immediate commercial success in the US but performed exceptionally well in Europe and Australia. Today, Songs Of Love And Hate is recognized as a masterpiece, having been included in Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
