About the album What's THIS For...!

What's THIS For...! is the second album by Killing Joke, which was released in June 1981, just eight months after their debut. The recording took place in early 1981 at Town House Studios in London. The production was done by the band itself along with Hugh Padgham and Nick Launay. Launay was chosen due to his previous work with Public Image Ltd.

What's THIS For...! embodies the spirit of post-punk but is characterized by a denser, more aggressive and industrial sound. Dominating are the intense "tribal" drums of Big Paul Ferguson, the metallic guitars of Geordie Walker, and the effect-laden vocals of Jaz Coleman. The album's title and part of its themes are inspired by the occultist Aleister Crowley. The lyrics explore dark, political, and social issues, reflecting the tension and social unrest in Britain at that time. The cover photo depicts a building on Colegate 88 street in Norwich, England.

The album reached No. 42 on the British charts. It includes the iconic single Follow The Leaders, which became a hit in clubs of the era.
