Kid Rock's album Cocky was released on November 20, 2001, by Atlantic Records. It is a milestone in his career as it solidified his shift towards a more multidimensional sound, combining the rebelliousness of rap-rock with the American tradition of country. Cocky was Kid Rock's fifth album.
It is a blend of rap rock, country rock, blues, nu metal, and hip hop. The album balances between aggressive tracks and melodic ballads. Most of the lyrics and music are penned by Robert Ritchie (Kid Rock), with contributions from his band members and Uncle Kracker. Kid Rock himself signed the production of the album. Some of the significant collaborations on the album include Sheryl Crow, who participated in the iconic duet Picture, which achieved massive success on the country charts. Also, the album closes with WCSR featuring Snoop Dogg.
The album debuted at No. 7 on the Billboard 200, selling approximately 223,000 copies in its first week, and eventually peaked at No. 3 in the U.S. Cocky has been certified 5 times platinum by the RIAA, having sold over 5.3 million copies in the U.S. alone. In Canada, 200,000 copies were sold and it reached No. 7 in New Zealand.
