Welcome To Poppy's by Fun Lovin’ Criminals
About the album Welcome To Poppy's
The album Welcome To Poppy's was released in September 2003. The title of the record serves as a tribute to Poppy's, a well-known shop in Brooklyn that was a point of reference for the band. Welcome to Poppy's marked a transitional period for the group's lineup. It was the last record on which Maxwell "Mackie" Jayson participated as an official member on drums (although he had already started being replaced on some tracks). Shortly after the release, Mark Francis "Frank Benbini" Reid permanently took over the position behind the drums, completing the classic trio that would continue for the following years.
The recording process of Fun Lovin' Criminals' fourth album took place at Magic Shop studios in New York, with the band itself taking on the production. Schematically, their sound maintained the familiar blend of hip-hop, rock, blues, and jazz elements, with a slightly more "relaxed" and atmospheric feel compared to their previous works. Session musicians such as Mackie Jayson and Timo Ellis on drums participated in the recordings.
Although the album received positive reviews for its "cool" and "smooth" style, it did not manage to reach the levels of the band's early successes. It debuted at number 20 in the United Kingdom. Overall, the album is considered one of their more "mature" moments, despite the fact that commercially it lagged compared to the band's past.
