About the album West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum
The West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum was a psychiatric asylum in West Yorkshire that operated from 1818 to 1995 (!) Kasabian, who hail from the area, chose this name as the title for their third studio album, an album released in 2009. This was a suggestion by guitarist Serge Pizzorno, who got the idea while watching a documentary on television about the history of the asylum.
In this particular album, Kasabian were left without Christopher "Chris" Karloff, who departed due to musical differences with the other band members. His position was taken by Tim Carter. The album abounds with compositions that move between psychedelic and space rock, although in reality, the best characterization of its musical style is indie rock. Sergio Pizzorno has taken on the - almost - exclusive role of the songwriter.
The West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum produced four successful singles and reached No.1 in the United Kingdom, where it went platinum three times.
