About the album Millionaires
In 1999, James closed the 1990s—a decade during which the band had built a splendid career—with the album Millionaires. Millionaires became the eighth studio album of James and musically it moves between indie rock and pop music. What had changed in the group's composition was the position of the guitarist; Canadian Michael Kulas had taken the place of James Lawrence "Larry" Gott—from whom the band's name originated—who had been exhausted by continuous performances throughout the previous years.
The band started working on new material in May 1998. This lasted until February 1999, when the new album was completed. The production of the record was handled by Brian Eno, Saul Davies (guitarist of James), Mark Hunter, and Steve Osborne, while Faithless also produced Afro Lover (!) The first single of the album was I Know What I'm Here For, which reached No. 22 in the UK.
Millionaires reached No. 2 in the UK, went gold exceeding 100,000 sales, and deservedly earned a place among the best albums of its year coming from the British pop/rock scene.
