About the album Smokin'

The British band Humble Pie found themselves at a crossroads of decisions in 1972, as their guitarist Peter Frampton had left to pursue a solo career and major success had not yet knocked on the door for the young men from Essex. Thus, in February 1972, they entered the studio and by March their fifth album was ready and released, which would become their greatest commercial success with the title Smokin'.

Steve Marriott took the whole Smokin' affair very personally, as he wrote songs, played guitars, sang, and also did the production. He wanted to prove that he could manage without Peter Frampton. In the end, he collapsed in the studio from exhaustion.

The album eventually succeeded, and it even made it in the U.S., where it reached No.6 on the Billboard chart and sold about 500,000 copies. For a while, Humble Pie were able to see their dream become a reality, although from then on their path was rather downward.
