About the album Opus Eponymous

Opus Eponymous was released in October 2010 and is the debut album of the Swedish band Ghost. It is considered the record that laid the groundwork for their subsequent global success, combining occult aesthetics with catchy melodies. Opus Eponymous was created under conditions of extreme secrecy, with the members maintaining their anonymity as "Nameless Ghouls." Classic equipment was used, such as Gibson SG guitars and Orange amplifiers, to achieve a vintage sound.

The album was recorded in a few weeks in the band's hometown, Linköping, Sweden. The basic recordings took place at Mayfire Studios, with additional material recorded at White Light Studio. Mixing and mastering were done by Jaime Gomez Arellano at Orgone Mastering in London. All songs are credited to "A Ghoul Writer," the pseudonym of the group's leader Tobias Forge (who at the time appeared as Papa Emeritus). The production was handled by Gene Walker (another pseudonym of Forge). The sound of the album is characterized by a "retro" air of the early 1980s as it blends elements from heavy metal, occult rock, and doom metal, even psychedelic rock. The cover was designed by Swedish artist Basilevs 254 and is a direct homage to the poster of the mini-series 'Salem's Lot (1979) by Stephen King. It depicts Papa Emeritus above the cathedral of Linköping.

The only official single was Elizabeth - a reference to Elizabeth Bathory, who was a Hungarian countess, known as the "Blood Countess of Čachtice," considered the most prolific female murderer in the history of Hungary and Slovakia, although some believe she was simply a victim of a political conspiracy. The track Ritual also became extremely popular and remains a staple in their setlist. Initially, it had limited commercial success, reaching No. 50 on the Swedish charts. Over the years it gained cult status.
