About the album Gentle Giant

Gentle Giant, a collective of musicians, some of whom had acquired a classical music education and others who were self-taught rock/blues musicians, formed the group and with producer Tony Visconti, who had just started his first steps in record production, recorded their first album in 1970, titled with the name of the band.

The seven compositions that make up the album bear the hallmark of the classical music studies of brothers Derek, Phil, and Ray Shulman, while the composition of the tracks also includes Kerry Minnear, who had graduated from the Royal Academy of Music. Gentle Giant incorporate elements of jazz rock into their compositions and create a unique progressive rock sound, which would follow them in their subsequent works.

The album Gentle Giant stands among the most important progressive rock albums in the corresponding British scene in the early 1970s. The album was never officially released in the USA. Thus, its distinctive cover was used for the band's third album, Three Friends, in its American edition.
