Abacab by Genesis
About the album Abacab
Abacab from 1981 marks the huge shift that Genesis makes in their sound. Progressive rock – with perhaps the exception of the song Dodo / Lurker - disappears and gives way to art pop and a few years later only pop will remain, which will characterize their albums. Abacab was the first album of the band that was recorded at the Genesis-owned studio, The Farm.
Abacab came shortly after Phil Collins' first solo work, Face Value, which had been very successful. To some extent, one could argue that Abacab follows the musical footprints of Face Value.
Abacab would become a major commercial success for Genesis, reaching No.1 in the United Kingdom, No.7 in the U.S.A., and No.1 in France. The album was released with four different covers in which the artist Bill Smith played with the colors. This was because Genesis could not decide which cover they liked best. They eventually chose all four as they thought it would be nice to decorate the shop windows with four different covers of their record (!)
