The purchase of a 50-acre ranch in Texas in 2016 and the racist comments he heard from a White male owner of a neighboring ranch prompted Gary Clark Jr. to write the song This Land, while also keeping in mind the lyrics of This Land Is Your Land by Woodie Guthrie. This Land was the title of Gary Clark Jr.'s third studio album, which was released in 2019.

Here, Gary Clark Jr. skillfully blends blues, rock, and even hard rock to present an album worthy of his debut. His performance adapts according to the song, sometimes rapping, while other times it seems steeped in the soul of the '70s. All compositions are his own, and he was also involved in the production of the album.

This Land won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues Album the year after its release. It reached No. 6 on the Billboard chart and also achieved relative success in European countries.
