The 4 in the title is used both to show that it is the fourth album of Foreigner and to emphasize that the band now consists of four members and not six.

For the production of the album, they will collaborate with Mutt Lange, who will lead them to the fringes of hard rock without, however, losing the characteristic sound they had built with their previous works.

The recording lasted ten months, but in the end it was worth the effort since 4 is considered the creative and commercial peak of Foreigner with sales exceeding 7,000,000 copies worldwide.
