About the album Then Play On

In September 1969, Fleetwood Mac released their third studio album titled "Then Play On," a title derived from a phrase in William Shakespeare's play "Twelfth Night." The initial intention for the album's name was "Bread & Kunny." In this album, Fleetwood Mac creates a sound much more expansive than what they had done in their previous works. Blues Rock meets the psychedelic sound, folk rock, and in some parts even hard rock.

"Then Play On" is the last album featuring Peter Green, who, according to sound engineer Martin Birch, was the soul and driving force behind the creation of "Then Play On" as the others waited for Peter Green to show up at the studio with something he had prepared from home. Of the fourteen compositions that comprise the album, four are instrumental pieces. The production of the album belongs to Fleetwood Mac themselves. The cover of "Then Play On" was the work of English artist Maxwell Armfield, with the title of the piece being "Domesticated Mural Painting" from 1917.

At the time of its release in Great Britain, the album was well received by both critics and the public. "Then Play On" reached No. 6 on the charts. The album reached No. 109 on the Billboard.
