About the album When The World Knows Your Name

When The World Knows Your Name, which was released on April 3, 1989, represents the commercial peak of the Scottish band Deacon Blue. It was their second studio album. It is their only album that reached No.1 on the UK Albums Chart, dethroning even Madonna's Like a Prayer (!). It went double platinum in the United Kingdom. It has sold over 700,000 copies in the UK alone.

The band traveled to America to work with producer David Kahne. However, the collaboration was not successful, as the band felt Kahne was overly interfering with their sound. From these recordings, only the track Silhouette was eventually included on the record. Ultimately, British producer Warne Livesey (known for his work with The The and Midnight Oil) took over the majority of the album. Compared to their melancholy debut, Raintown, this album had a more "polished" pop-rock sound with enhanced electric guitars and a focus on commercial success. The album includes five hits that reached the Top 30 in the UK: Real Gone Kid (their first Top 10 hit), Wages Day, Fergus Sings the Blues, Love And Regret, and Queen Of The New Year.

The cover of When The World Knows Your Name is as iconic as its music, capturing the aesthetics of Glasgow and the identity of the band. The photograph was taken in Glasgow, specifically in the Park Circus area. Interestingly, this location is very close to the site used for the cover of their previous album, Raintown, but the shot was taken in the opposite direction.
