Curtis by Curtis Mayfield
About the album Curtis
Curtis Mayfield recorded his debut album titled Curtis between May and July of 1970. The release of Curtis took place in September 1970 and thus Mayfield began his personal career in the early 1970s, gradually leaving behind the Impressions and the soul of the 60s to become one of the pioneers of progressive soul.
The album starts on its first side with (Don't Worry) If There's A Hell Below, We're All Going To Go, while the second side begins with Move On Up. Both of these songs were singles from the album and two compositions that followed and characterized Mayfield throughout his subsequent significant career. All the compositions are by the artist himself, and the lyrics of the songs deal with sociopolitical issues concerning the black community in the U.S.
Curtis reached No. 19 on the Billboard and No. 30 in the United Kingdom. Its sales in the U.S. exceeded 500,000, making it the first gold album of the composer and singer from Chicago.
