About the album Chic

The self-titled debut album of Chic was released on November 22, 1977, by Atlantic Records, marking the beginning of a new era for disco and R&B. The recordings took place in New York, with producers being the group's founders, Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, who established an exceptionally clean and "sharp" sound.

The album includes two iconic singles: "Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)", which reached No. 6 in the U.S. and the U.K., featuring Luther Vandross on vocals, and "Everybody Dance", a global hit that reached No. 38 in the U.S. and No. 9 in Britain. Musically, Chic combines disco with funk elements and jazz orchestrations, such as the instrumental São Paulo. Despite some critics considering it less mature compared to their subsequent releases (C'est Chic, Risqué), today it is evaluated as an influential classic album that redefined dance music through the unparalleled chemistry between Rodgers' guitar and Edwards' bass. The cover does not feature the band members, but two well-known models of the time: Valentine Monnier (left) and Alva Chinn (right). This choice was consciously made by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, who wanted to emphasize style and anonymity, while remaining themselves in the background.

The album reached No. 27 on the Billboard 200 and No. 12 on the R&B charts, and went gold, surpassing 500,000 sales.
