An Innocent Man by Billy Joel
About the album An Innocent Man
After the "heavy" and experimental The Nylon Curtain, Joel wanted to create something fun, feeling like a "teenager" again due to his new personal life. The album An Innocent Man was released on August 8, 1983, and serves as a tribute to the music of Billy Joel's teenage years. It was Billy Joel's ninth studio album.
The material for the album was written very quickly, in just 6 weeks, and recorded at Chelsea Sound and A&R Recording in New York. The album and its ten songs are a blend of Doo-wop, Soul, and Early Rock & Roll from the late '50s and early '60s. Standouts included Uptown Girl, a tribute to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, An Innocent Man, inspired by Ben E. King, and Tell Her About It, which is a tribute to the Motown sound. In fact, from the ten songs on the album, seven (!) singles emerged.
An Innocent Man reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and remained there for 111 weeks (!) It has sold over 7 million copies in the U.S. (7x platinum) and about 13 million worldwide (!) It was nominated for a Grammy "Album of the Year" in 1984, losing to Michael Jackson's Thriller.
