About the album Piano Man
An - still unknown - Billy Joel records another album entitled Piano Man in September 1973, and as the album's title suggests, it is about a musician who sits at his piano and sings stories that describe incidents from the lives of patrons in dark, smoke-filled bars.
Piano Man is the album that introduces a young man from New York, who writes songs on his piano and performs them in the small clubs of California, where he has moved to seek his fortune and build his career, to a wide audience in the United States. Piano Man is Billy Joel's second album, in which he beautifully blends pop, soft rock, and country rock, and some of the results of this blending become songs like the album's namesake, The Ballad Of Billy The Kid, Captain Jack, or Worse Comes To Worst. The album was produced by Michael Stewart.
At the time of its release, Piano Man reached No.27 on the Billboard chart. Over the years, and with Billy Joel's fame growing and growing, it managed to sell 4,000,000 copies in the United States alone. Piano Man as a title remained to characterize the artist himself throughout his career.
