About the album Odelay

Odelay, Beck's fifth album, includes recordings made in 1994 and 1995, but as an album, it was released in the mid-1996. Odelay was one of the most notable albums of the American alternative sound of any version, as it contains and combines elements from rock and folk rock to hip hop and neo-psychedelia.

The title Odelay is nothing other than an English phonetic adaptation of the Spanish "Órale," which Spanish speakers in California used at that time to express "OK!". This album established Beck as a noteworthy artist for the 1990s, an artist who did not hesitate to experiment with music genres that seemed incompatible with each other. Odelay as an album was greatly aided by its first two singles, Where It's At and Devils Haircut.

Despite reaching No.13 on the Billboard chart, the album managed to steadily sell 2,300,000 copies only in the U.S., while the 200,000 copies sold in Japan (!) or the No.5 on Sweden's chart (!) were also significant and impressive.
