More Specials by The Specials
About the album More Specials
The success of the Specials' debut, instead of being a source of harmony, became the cause of discord among the band's members. Jerry Dammers proclaimed himself as the natural leader of the group and wanted the next album to include compositions that would appeal to a wider audience and contain lounge elements, while the others wanted to remain faithful to the sound that had characterized their journey so far. Eventually, More Specials was recorded during the summer of 1980 and was released in September.
The twelve compositions of the album seem to maintain the balance between what Dammers wanted and the rest. The album features Lee Thompson of Madness with his saxophone, Belinda Carlisle doing vocals, as well as Rhoda Dakar of the Bodysnatchers. From the album came two singles, Stereotype and Do Nothing. More Specials reached No.5 in Great Britain.
The disagreements among the members and an exhausting six-month tour that had taken place at the beginning of 1980 brought many changes to the band as several members left in 1981. More Specials eventually was the last album recorded by the original lineup of the Specials.
