Gish by The Smashing Pumpkins
About the album Gish
In late 1990, a new band recorded their first album. The recordings would continue until March 1991, and in May of the same year, the album was released on the market. The band is the Smashing Pumpkins from Chicago, and their debut is called Gish.
Gish as an album and as a sound fits within the wide category of alternative rock, but its noticeably raw moments push it towards grunge, which was being born at that time, while we must not overlook a generous dose of art rock mixed with dream-pop. The Smashing Pumpkins allow all their influences to be incorporated into the compositions of Gish, and the result is a unique album that would leave many hopes for the future for this then-newly emerging band. The production of the album belongs to Butch Vig, who was then an unknown music producer, and to the performer and composer of the group, Billy Corgan.
The album has sold so far 1,000,000 copies in the U.S. Quite well (!) for an album that barely made it into the Top-200 of Billboard, reaching only No. 195, when it was first released.
