Get Close by The Pretenders
About the album Get Close
The Get Close by the Pretenders is the result of the collaboration between American producers Bob Clearmountain, Jimmy Iovine, and the Englishman Steve Lillywhite (!), that is three of the top ten music producers of the 1980s. Get Close is the fourth studio album by Chrissie Hynde's band, who composes eight of the eleven songs on the record. Chrissie Hynde is the absolute leader of the band, and this is evident from the fact that she appears alone on the album cover, which happens for the first time (!)
At the time of recording Get Close, the Pretenders were in a transitional phase as they had not recovered from the death of two of the band members. This particularly affects drummer Martin Chambers, whom Hynde removes from the group after the recording of the album. In terms of its musical style, Get Close moves somewhere between the mainstream rock of the mid-1980s and the new wave, which was in retreat.
Undoubtedly, the big success of the album was the single Don't Get Me Wrong, one of the most characteristic songs of the Pretenders. Get Close reached No. 6 in the United Kingdom and No. 25 in the United States, while it was also a big success in Spain, where its sales reached 100,000 copies. Worldwide sales of the album have approached 1,000,000.
