Crash by The Human League
About the album Crash
The Crash of 1986 marked The Human League's bold, albeit eventful, attempt to return to the top by transforming their cold synth-pop sound into something warmer and more commercial.
The band traveled to Minneapolis to collaborate with legendary R&B producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The clash of artistic worlds was evident: the producers imposed a sleek, "American" sound with strong elements of funk and soul, often sidelining the band members in favor of experienced session musicians. The result was a blend of robotic vocals and dynamic grooves, giving the sense of a more pop version of Janet Jackson's producers.
The lead single "Human" reached No. 1 in the U.S. and No. 8 in Great Britain. The tracks "I Need Your Loving" and "Love Is All That Matters" failed to replicate the same chart triumph. Despite internal tensions that led to the departure of members such as Adrian Wright, Crash achieved its purpose: it kept The Human League alive in the music industry, granting them a second golden era.
