On August 20, 1969, the recordings of the Beatles' eleventh album are completed. This will be the last day that officially the most legendary band of all time recorded something. Although Abbey Road will not be the last work of the Beatles to be released - Let It Be will follow in 1970, which was ready from the early months of 1969 - it will be the last thing they recorded all four together.
Abbey Road is the only Beatles album whose cover does not feature either the title of the album or the name of the band. The title is implied by the road depicted, while the name of the band by the forms of the four Beatles crossing the pedestrian crossing. The photo was taken on August 8, 1969, outside the EMI Records studios in London on Abbey Road. Photographer Iain Macmillan took six photos and Paul McCartney, after examining them with a magnifying glass, chose this one which was destined to become one of the most iconic album covers of all time.
For the record, George Martin was in production. Sales of Abbey Road have now exceeded 31,000,000 copies worldwide.
