About the album Gentlemen

Gentlemen - released in 1993 - by the Afghan Whigs is one of the most iconic albums of the alternative scene of the 90s. It combines the noise of grunge with the soul of soul and R&B. The production was done by frontman Greg Dulli, who created a dark "circle of songs" about a toxic relationship.

The album was mainly recorded at the historic Ardent Studios in Memphis, giving it a cinematic feel that the Afghan Whigs themselves described as "shot on location". A small part of the recording took place at Ultrasuede Studio in Cincinnati. The album cover depicts two children in a pose reminiscent of an adult crisis, while the title "Gentlemen" was used ironically as it contrasts with the content of the lyrics, which describe dishonest and harsh behaviors. Although it did not sweep the charts, it is now considered a classic. The singles Debonair and Gentlemen received significant exposure on MTV.

Gentlemen has sold approximately 150,000 copies in the U.S., making it the most commercially successful release by the Afghan Whigs.
