About the album Turn Of The Cards
Turn Of The Cards is the fifth studio album of the English progressive rock band Renaissance. The album was recorded in 1974 at De Lane Lea Studios in London and was released in July of the same year. It is the last album in which Renaissance incorporate pure music themes from classical or Renaissance music into their compositions.
The record consists of six songs. Guitarist Michael Dunford and singer Betty Thatcher are the main composers of the songs on Turn Of The Cards. The production of the album is by the band, Dick Plant, and Richard Gottehrer, who, according to drummer Terry Sullivan, made few appearances in the studio.
Noteworthy is the album cover, which is another work by Hipgnosis. The cover emerged after the people at Hipgnosis spent hours in the recording studio and got a sense of the style and content of the compositions. The castle depicted on the cover is Warwick Castle located in central England. In fact, the album title Turn Of The Cards emerged when members of Renaissance saw the drafts of the cover.
