About the album Metal Box
The album Metal Box by Public Image Ltd (PiL), released in November 1979, is considered one of the most iconic works of post-punk. It was the second album of the band led by John Lydon. Metal Box was recorded between March and October of the same year.
The initial release included three 12-inch vinyl records, which played at 45 rpm. Instead of the classic paper sleeve, the album was released in a 16mm metal canister (film canister) with the band's logo embossed. The concept was by Dennis Morris. Due to the difficulty of use (the vinyl records were hard to remove from the canister), it was later re-released as "Second Edition" in a conventional paper sleeve. The sound is an experimental combination of post-punk, dub, and avant-garde. Dominating are the heavy, hypnotic basslines of Jah Wobble, the sharp "metallic" guitars of Keith Levene, and the eerie vocals of John Lydon.
The main singles were Death Disco (also known as Swan Lake) and Memories. Despite its experimental nature, the album achieved notable success on the charts and is considered today one of the greatest albums of the new wave and post-punk era.
