MTV Unplugged In New York by Nirvana
About the album MTV Unplugged In New York
On November 18, 1993, Nirvana presented an acoustic set of their own songs as well as covers in front of a small audience at the Sony Music studios in New York. The entire effort was supported by MTV and was part of the "unplugged" series that was taking place during those years. The recording and filming of the concert took place one month after the release of the album In Utero and six months before Kurt Cobain's suicide.
The concert was broadcast by MTV on December 16, 1993, and its release on record took place on November 1, 1994, a year after its recording and about half a year after Cobain's suicide. All these factors created a legend around this "unplugged" version as it was Nirvana's first official work released with Kurt Cobain now deceased.
Of all the songs contained in the album, the most distinguished and beloved was the cover of David Bowie's The Man Who Sold The World. Beyond all the circumstances that gave particular momentum to the album, the record is an excellent effort that highlighted another side of Nirvana. Sales of MTV Unplugged In New York are now approaching 13,000,000, placing it in second position in sales behind Nevermind.
