About the album Discovery

At the time of creating Discovery, Mike Oldfield had settled and was living in Switzerland for tax reasons. There, from January to June 1984, he recorded his ninth album, which would be released on June 25, 1984. Discovery is an album whose musical style moves between pop & rock sound and progressive rock due to the 12-minute instrumental music piece, The Lake, which completes the album.

Mike Oldfield is the composer of all the music tracks, plays all the instruments except the drums, which he assigned to Simon Phillips, and personally produced the album. The songs are performed by Barry Palmer and Maggie Reilly – his regular collaborators of the '80s - who highlight the album's songs with their distinctive voices. The great commercial success came with the first single, To France, while the song Tricks Of The Light was the second single of the album.

Discovery was one of Mike Oldfield's commercially successful albums. It was loved mainly on the European continent, especially in Germany, where almost half of the album's sales were recorded (approximately 250,000 copies). In Great Britain, the album reached No. 15 and recorded sales of approximately 100,000 copies.
