About the album Clutching At Straws

Clutching At Straws was released in 1987 and is the fourth studio album by Marillion and the last with singer Fish, marking the end of an iconic era for the band. It is considered one of the most important examples of neo-progressive rock. It combines the complexity of prog with more direct, pop/rock melodies and a dark, melancholic atmosphere.

The album is thematic and revolves around a character named Torch, a writer struggling with "writer's block." The lyrics by Fish (an alter ego of himself) explore alcohol abuse, drugs, loneliness, and disappointment with life and fame. The recordings took place during a time of tension between the members, which is reflected in the dark and honest character of the music. Production was handled by Chris Kimsey, known for his collaboration with the Rolling Stones. The recording was done at London's Westside Studios, using 24-track tape, achieving a sound that balances between organic and dynamic.

The singles from the album were Incommunicado, the most "rock" and aggressive single, Sugar Mice, a melancholic ballad about unemployment and despair, and Warm Wet Circles, an atmospheric track with poetic lyrics. Although it did not reach the sales of its predecessor, it is considered by critics and fans as their masterpiece. It reached No. 2 on the UK charts. In the UK, it sold 100,000 copies, while in Germany it reached 250,000 sales.
