About the album Erotica

In 1992, Madonna shook the waters of global pop with Erotica, an album released almost simultaneously with the provocative book "Sex." It was her first project under her own company, Maverick, in a daring production shared mainly with Shep Pettibone. Erotica was the fifth studio album of Madonna Louise Ciccone.

Musically, Erotica was a dark, hypnotic combination of house, R&B, and lounge jazz, with strong spoken word elements. Madonna abandoned the "bright" sound of the '80s for a more urban, "underground" sound, influenced by the club scene of New York. Its sound is generally characterized by strong bass, raw production, and an "underground" feel reminiscent of a club. Beyond sex, Erotica deals with love, intimacy, and loss, deeply influenced by the AIDS crisis that was affecting the artistic community at the time. The music video for the title track, directed by Fabien Baron, was banned by MTV (or aired only after midnight) due to its highly provocative content.

Despite the initial awkwardness of the critics and the "scandal" surrounding its promotion, the album achieved significant commercial success, reaching 6,000,000 sales worldwide. It reached No. 2 on the American Billboard 200 and No. 1 in countries like Australia, France, and Finland.
