• American Fool was the fifth album in John Cougar's career. Initially, the people at A&R Records believed that the album should not be released due to weak compositions. The conflict reached the point of wanting to fire Cougar.

The producer of American Fool was Don Gehman, who went through difficult times in the studio, as the record label executives rejected what they created.

Ultimately, the record was released and became the album that would establish John Cougar with the American audience with the 5,000,000 sales it achieved and the nine weeks at No.1. The song American Fool was included in the 2005 reissue.
