La Flaca by Jarabe de Palo
About the album La Flaca
"La Flaca" from 1996 is the iconic debut album of the Spanish band Jarabe de Palo, led by the late Pau Donés. The album is produced by Joe Dworniak, known for his collaboration with important names in Spanish rock.
The recording of the album took place in March 1996 at El Laboratorio studio in Barcelona. The mixing was done in April 1996 at Moody Studios in London. The album is characterized by a unique blend of latin rock, pop, and world beat. The sound incorporates elements from blues and classic rock and from acoustic and Spanish guitars, giving it a warm, Mediterranean air. Apart from the titular "La Flaca," which was written by Donés during a trip to Cuba inspired by a Cuban woman dancing in a nightclub called La Tasca, the album also produced the hits "El Lado Oscuro" and "Grita."
Initially, the album was a commercial failure, selling just 12,000 copies in the first seven months. It became a huge hit only after the song "La Flaca" was used in a television commercial (for the cigarette brand Ducados). In total, it has sold over 1,100,000 copies worldwide. In Spain, it went 6 times platinum (over 600,000 copies) and achieved great success in Italy and Latin America.
