About the album Ritual de lo Habitual

In 1990, Jane’s Addiction released their second and last studio album before their first breakup. The album would be titled Ritual de lo Habitual, which means “the ritual of the habitual” in Spanish. Here, the musical style becomes more metal while always remaining in the alternative sphere. The second side of the album is particularly impressive, with compositions introducing a progressive element as the length of the compositions increases significantly and there are changes in their musical motifs.

The album included the band’s biggest commercial success and perhaps their most well-known song, Been Caught Stealing, which was the third single from Ritual de lo Habitual. The album was also accompanied – like the previous one – by a provocative cover. Some record stores refused to put it on their shelves because of the nude cover, leading to the creation of a second cover that adorned some copies. The “alternative” cover has the band’s name written on it, the album title, and a text urging American citizens to protect the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

The album surpassed its predecessor in success. It reached No. 19 on the Billboard and 2,000,000 copies were sold in the U.S. Considering the circumstances, Jane’s Addiction also found success in other countries, such as Canada and the United Kingdom. Ritual de lo Habitual is considered a musical legacy for what followed in the many years in the alternative metal and alternative rock genres.
